The Newest Lil' Pumpkin

The Newest Lil' Pumpkin

Our newest little pumpkin has visited the studio this month.  She is Baby E and came a little early, but that is okay!  We had the best time photographing her and watching her smiles.  Big sister was helpful enough to go outside and we could get the both of them in this beautiful Fall foliage!

Rub a Dub Dub, Three Kids in a Tub

Rub a dub dub, three kids in a tub.... or so may happen at home.  With two boys and one small girl, this family is always on the go.  But we took a few moments to step back and capture the memories of these little ones while they are still little.  Thank you to Grandma who helped out!

"Meet Me at the Muny.... the Muny in Forest Park!"

This is exactly what we did for a recent high school senior photo shoot here in the St. Louis area.  We made our way to Forest Park and parked near the Muny in order to capture these one of a kind photographs for a very special and talented high school senior.

The Joy of Fall

The Joy of Fall

One of the greatest advantages to photos in the Fall is the leaves.  Crumbles piles of leathery leaves blanket the ground just waiting for children to gather them up and hurl them into the air.  I love to see the sheer joy and wonder on their faces captured forever.

The C family and I created some wonderful memories at the park this month.

Friends Forever Photo Shoot | Wentzville Missouri | High School Seniors

This photo shoot is about one of the most fun 30 minutes ever!  Everyone should consider doing a best friend photo shoot.  I think it is such a great way to get quality memories of your lifetime of friendship recorded forever.  When you go back, you can show your kids what you looked like back "in the day" and who your friends were.

I can't emphasize how much fun this was enough.

Seniors are one of my favorite people to photograph.  And seniors who are also actors???  Even better!  Maybe it is because I used to teach high school, but they have a special place in my heart.  Here is a recent photo shoot we did this month.

Beginning of Family Fall Photos...

Beginning of Family Fall Photos...

The beginning of the end of Fall Family photos is here.  In St. Louis, there are a precious two weeks at the end of October where the leaves are turning from green to yellow.  It has been a very eventful last few weeks with returning to work as a full time substitute teacher, photographing a wedding and numerous families and seniors.

Here is the Lowery Family with their sweet two little kids!

I love this park!  Not only do we get beautiful purple flowers in the spring, but in the Fall, the park has these beautiful cotton stems.  This family is near and dear to me as I have seen them grown up over the years ever since my son went to preschool with her daughter.

Despite needing a scooter for her foot, this mom trudged all over the park with us to get her family photos.  Yes, they are important and I agree!  The kids were great!  What a sweet, sweet family.

Baby C visited us last week!  She was born at almost 10 pounds, but I would never have guessed.  She is absolutely perfect just the way she is.

I need to catch up on blog posts so here we are!  :-)

This wonderful family of 5 is near and dear to my heart.  I teach Sunday School to the little ones and the oldest is in my class.  It was so fun seeing them all together and capturing memories with them and his siblings, too!

It looks like fairies and Pokemon abound here at Missouri's county and state parks!  This photo shoot is for a dear friend of mine and of her beautiful 5 year old daughter.  We did take some candid ones as well, but I just couldn't help sprinkling in some fairy dust!  :-)

Toddler Photo Session | Children Photographer Wentzville Missouri

Toddler Photo Session | Children Photographer Wentzville Missouri

The great thing about toddlers is that their expressions are so pure, so full of joy and so full of passion.  Chasing and running around the park for a little over an hour gave us a little bit of a workout, but in the end it is all worth the effort.  Here are a few photos from our evening photo session.  I know some people may not want their children's toys in the photograph, but I really think using his toys and blankie in the photos makes this session even more special.  We love those children and we love seeing them with their special items that they won't remember in ten years - but we will because the special toys and blankets are in the photographs.

How to Photograph Silhouettes

How to Photograph Silhouettes

sunset children family photographer Wentzville Missouri

Ever wonder how to make a silhouette photograph of your family, kids or on vacation?  The photographs are priceless and look beautiful blown up into canvases, large prints, in a series or just about anywhere!  Here is a DIY about making your own large canvas photographs!

Step One:  Time

Time of photo:  8:45pm
Sunset that day: 8:29pm

For pretty silhouettes, take them during what we call the "blue hour".  The short period of time (which really isn't an hour... it's more like 15 minutes) after sunset is the best time for silhouettes.  Or the only time.  Truthfully, I cannot get my kids up at 5:30am to try to do a silhouette :-)

Step Two: Weather

Weather will make all the difference.  The light bouncing off the clouds makes for a lot of pretty colors.  But, you don't need clouds.  You CAN use a plain sky as well!

Step Three: Location, Location, Location.

Same as in real estate.... the location of your subject is important!  The photo below was taken with the kids facing west and the sunset is in front of them.  This photo is taken in the same place and time as the others in this blog post.

This photo below has the kids facing east and the sun is setting behind them.

Step Four: Subjects and Posing

You can choose many different subjects:  kids, family, animals, etc.   For the best silhouettes, make sure their arms and legs are OUT and BENT.  Without bent arms, they will look like sticks.   What I mean with legs is that they are not together, but apart in relation to the photograph.  Otherwise, it looks like they have only one leg.  Arms need to be out as well - or they will look like they have none!  Of course there are rules to be broken, but these simple posing techniques will help yield more positive results.

My favorites are the ones with the kids holding hands.

Step Five:  Camera

There are certain things your camera will need to do... but it isn't too complicated.  Make sure the flash is turned off.

Have your subjects where you want them.

Expose for the sky by having your focal point on the sky.   How to get your subject sharp?  One of two ways:  focus on the very edge of the subject/person OR switch to manual focus.  A third way would be to try increasing the aperture in Aperture Priorty mode or Manual to f8 or higher.

If you are not sure how to change the exposure settings, try it in automatic!

f/4; ISO 1000; 1/125; 50mm 1.8; Nikon D750

(Yes, I broke my rule about using f8 and up.  The image was sharp with f4, so I left it alone.

Step Six:  Composition

When taking the shot, try to get a lot more sky and a lot less ground.  The ground is black.  It's deadspace.  The sky is beautiful and needs to fill the frame.  The photo below I probably should have had less ground and more sky.  But I was down the hill and the kids were at the top of the hill, so this was more difficult than if we were on even ground.
